Theft & Vandalism Insurance Claims:

What You Need to Know

While theft and vandalism insurance claims often follow similar procedures as other property damage claims, there are important differences that require special attention. At Complex Process Solution Adjusters, we specialize in guiding you through these unique challenges to help you get the compensation you deserve.

Key Questions Insurance Companies Ask

When a theft or vandalism claim is submitted, insurance companies typically want answers to the following:

  1. Did the theft or vandalism actually occur?

  2. Did the policyholder own or possess the items claimed?

  3. Can proof of ownership and value be provided?

  4. Was there any related property damage (broken windows, doors, locks, etc.)?

The Importance of a Police Report

An official police report is essential for any theft or vandalism claim. It serves as the foundational documentation that proves the event occurred and supports future recovery efforts by the insurer (called subrogation).

Make sure the list of stolen or damaged items in your report is accurate. If you discover additional losses later, update the police report immediately and inform your insurance provider by filing a supplemental report.

Proving Ownership & Value

Insurance companies will request proof of ownership and valuation. This can include:

  • Photos or videos of the items

  • Purchase receipts or credit card statements

  • Appraisals

  • Insurance endorsements

  • Any related financial documentation

The more documentation you provide, the stronger your claim.

What Happens If You Don’t Have Documentation?
For larger claims, if ownership or value can’t be verified through documents, insurers may invoke their right to an Examination Under Oath (EUO). They may also request financial records or tax returns to support the claim, especially to assess if the items are consistent with your income and lifestyle.

Policy Review & Coverage Limits

It’s important to review your policy closely. Many insurance policies have specific limits, exclusions, or special requirements for theft and vandalism claims. Some high-value items must be specifically listed, or "scheduled" in your policy to be fully covered.

This can often be done through an inland marine floater policy, which requires third-party appraisals and sets a payout limit.

Appraisals vs. Actual Payouts

A common misconception is that a scheduled item will automatically be paid out at the appraised value. That’s not always the case.

Insurers may source replacement pricing from vendors they work with—often at discounted rates—especially for items like jewelry. In some cases, they’ll offer to replace the item for you, based on these lower market rates.

Tip: Ask your insurance provider which vendors they use for replacement pricing, and consider getting your appraisal from the same source to avoid surprises later.

Why Theft & Vandalism Claims Can Be Complex

Despite being common, theft and vandalism claims are often some of the most time-consuming and complex claims to settle. Between proving ownership, navigating policy language, and negotiating value, it can quickly become overwhelming.
